Adopting the Understanding By Design (Jay McTighe and Grant Wiggins) approach, the HAP seeks to enable each student to have a deep understanding of each discipline within the Humanities. Overarching, big ideas are emphasized. Teaching is carried out with the conscious use of essential questions to guide the crafting of performance tasks and the planning of individual lesson structures. Less emphasis will be placed on covering the curriculum, rather the emphasis will be on uncovering the core of each discipline, to enable students to go into the depth of each Humanities subject. Essential questions in the study of History may include: Why study History? Why is the study of History a study of personalities? What critical event set off other events that brought about a particular conflict? Social Studies for Years Three and Four adopts an interdisciplinary approach where the enduring understandings include the interconnectedness of people in society, the importance of tolerance in a multicultural society and that active citizenry ensures good governance. History and Geography curriculum will be based on the GEP Enrichment Model, where differentiation is made in terms of content, process, product and environment. Through authentic assessment involving performance tasks, debates and role-play, students in Year One to Four develop productive habits of mind to be reflective learners. Using carefully crafted rubrics, teacher- and peer-assessment are carried out so as to assess the students' understanding. The curriculum in Years Five and Six is in line with the GCE ¡®A' level curriculum. The Music Elective Programme (MEP) and Visual Art Programme are available to eligible students from Year One to Six. Both programmes are filled with fun based learning that allow students talented in the arts to fulfill their potential. Students in these programmes will have the opportunity to experiment with a variety of arts media, participate in arts events, go on field trips as well as attend Master classes.
