To kick off 2008, a 3-day orientation program was organized for the year twos. The objectives of the program were:
1. To build synergy within the class
2. To provide a platform for the pupils to work together for team building
3. To provide opportunities for students to experience elements of leadership
4. To provide fun in the learning
On the first day of school, things were a little slow as the logistics were being settled for the exciting things to happen on the next two days.
On 3rd January, things got to an exciting start. The year twos were going round the island in an amazing race named 'Xplore'. Xplore is designed especially for DHS students and has been conducted for the past 2 years. This event was organized by the student councilors and the year three students acted as facilitators. The students were divided into groups where they would travel to various parts of Singapore to uncover some clues to find out the location of the next checkpoint. At the checkpoint, they would need to complete a task in order to earn points.
On 4thJanuary, the day started off with a planning session for the sandcastle activity in the gym. The students have to design a sandcastle based on the theme 'Dunman High Integrated Resort'. The different groups have to design parts of the integrated resort. Then they would need to put all the plans together to come up with the design and to build it later in the afternoon at East Coast beach. The afternoon at the beach was rather eventful. The weather was not on our side. We had rain, sun and wind all in one afternoon. What is most encouraging is that our students¡¯ spirits were not dampened by the poor weather. Even though they had to take cover from the rain now and then, they were all on task as soon as they were able to. By the end of two hours, the Dunman High Integrated Resort was built.
In short, the orientation achieved the objectives of teamwork and having fun whilst learning. |
